The Characters

The hero, heroine, dame, detective, villain, henchman... they're all here!

Female
Narrator

The Narrator makes the audience feel welcome, and intervenes now and then to tell a bit of story. This role needs someone with a lot of sparkle - capable of connecting with the grownups and kids. A good singing voice is helpful, but not absolutely critical for this role. Brio more important!

Songs:
Normal Workaday People
Initial Diagnosis
Don't Be Scared
The Key Song
Finale

Female (young)
Sapphi Van Helsing, the vampire slayer.

Sapphi is the heroine. Fighting evil and vampires wherever she finds them, she wins the affection of the audience with ease. Strong singing and confidence are both a must.

Songs:
Rich
My First Love (reprise)
Don't Be Scared
The Train Song
The Key Song
Finale

Male
Doctor John Menzies Renfield

Doctor Renfield, somewhere between youth and middle age, appears to be a plain local GP for Stratford, but he has a dark secret. You're looking for someone who can manage both light character humour to get laughs, but also show the audience a tortured soul without getting laughs!

Songs:
Initial Diagnosis
A Second Opinion
The Key Song
Finale

Male (in drag)
Coco Van Helsing

The pantomime dame and Sapphi's mother. Very poor but at the same time very avaricious. You'd need a big, camp personality for this part. Someone who can really play up to the audience. Lots of songs but it wouldn't need the world's strongest singing voice for this part. Character is more important.

Songs:
[Rich]
Turn My Plan Around
Don't Be Scared
[The Train Song]
Fancy Meeting You Here
The Key Song
Finale

Male (young)
Jonathan Harker

The hero. Jonathan starts out weak and cowardly but eventually finds his courage. A young man with a lot of stage presence, and a sense of comedy. Good singing voice is an advantage as Jonathan has a couple of the more dramatic songs.

Songs:
My First Love
One of the Few
The Key Song
Finale

Male
Lord Emo Globin

The principal villain in Act I. He storms, threatens, shouts and struts. A good part for a larger-than-life performer, but someone with a sense of comedy (you only want to scare the kids so much!). Almost any age suitable.

Songs:
Turn My Plan Around

Female
Lucy Lastic

Lucy is Sapphi's best friend. A jolly-hockeysticks schoolgirl type who gets mad crushes on people like Doctor Renfield. A talent for physical comedy and a strong singing voice are what this part needs.

Songs:
Initial Diagnosis
Don't Be Scared
[The Train Song]
A Second Opinion
The Key Song
Finale

Male
Count Dracula

An evil Transylvanian vampire, guileful, silky and mean. We need someone who can give us a reasonable cod-Transylvanian accent as well as a versatile and ideally powerful voice.

Songs:
The Vamp

Female (in drag)
Sheerluck Jones

An incompetent detective. Bumbling, bumptious and foolish. Someone with an "'ello, 'ello, 'ello" accent (we don't mean French), and fast comic delivery.

Songs:
I Never Get It Wrong
Finale

Male (young)
PC World

Sheerluck's long-suffering sidekick. He never says anything at all, but the actor (possibly someone between 11-14) should have a good hangdog expression.

Songs:
Finale

Male
Van Helsing

Coco's long lost husband and Sapphi's father. An older man. German (accent optional). Would suit a character player.

Songs:
Fancy Meeting You Here
